Synopsis

Zombie Driver HD is a top-down vehicular combat game set in a city overrun by zombies. As a driver working with the military, the player rescues survivors, hauls cargo and fights large mutated bosses across 31 story missions, running over the undead and upgrading 13 vehicles with guns, rockets and flamethrowers. Two extra modes add races against armed AI drivers and arena survival against endless waves.

Reception

Critics gave the console and PC releases middling scores, enjoying the simple carnage and comparing it to classic top-down crime games while calling the story mode dull, the design scrappy and the content thin, and several regretted the lack of multiplayer. The 2009 original had drawn similar remarks about being short and repetitive. Steam players today rate it very positively as a cheap stress reliever that runs smoothly even on weak laptops. Many of them still find the campaign repetitive and the Blood Race physics frustrating, and most recommend buying it on sale.

  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The campaign, Blood Race and Slaughter modes and all DLC remain available, though one 2026 report says the online leaderboards never finished loading (Steam Community).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen is supported with a WSGF gold rating, and 4K works with a poorly scaled interface (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
Full controller support with remapping and Xbox button prompts (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Launch crashes have known fixes such as running the configuration tool or reinstalling the Visual C++ runtime, and a rare loop on the first mission clears by restarting the campaign (Steam Community).

Design today

3.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The game has full controller support with remapping and Xbox prompts, plus remappable keys, and players describe the driving as tight and intuitive in the story mode. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Widescreen and 4K resolutions work, but the in-game interface does not scale well at high resolutions and the mouse works only in menus. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Progress is kept between short story missions, finished missions can be replayed from a mission select, and money gathered during a mission counts only once that mission is completed; mid-mission checkpoints are not documented. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Each mission states its goal directly, and players describe the arcade driving and shooting as simple to pick up without outside help. Source: steamcommunity.com, metacritic.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Critics and players widely call the story mode repetitive and padded, with dull or unnecessary missions mainly worth playing for upgrade money. Source: steamcommunity.com, metacritic.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The fixed top-down camera keeps the car and nearby zombies in view, and players praise how well the cars handle through crowds and tight alleys, with complaints limited to the physics of the Blood Race mode. Source: steamcommunity.com.
