Synopsis

A first-person puzzle game by Alexander Bruce set in a stark, mostly white maze where space does not follow normal rules. Corridors loop back on themselves, rooms change when the player looks away, and a gun that moves colored blocks becomes the main tool for getting through.

What people say

Critics in 2013 praised it as one of the most original puzzle games in years, comparing it to walking through a modern art museum and calling it both inviting and very hard. Players today still rate its mind-bending puzzles and non-linear structure highly, and it runs smoothly even on weak hardware and the Steam Deck. Common complaints are puzzles that feel obtuse or arbitrary, little explanation of goals, and a maze that makes it easy to get lost. Some players also find the bright, high-contrast visuals cause eye strain or dizziness.

Design today

3 / 5
  • ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard

Standard first-person movement with a single block gun works smoothly on mouse and keyboard. Controller input is limited to the Steam Controller, so a regular gamepad is not an option. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, vaporlens.app.

  • ✗Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens

The options menu lacks many common resolutions, and 4K needs an ini edit or a community patch tool, so the game is awkward to set up on today's screens. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress

The game keeps a single save slot and saves automatically, so progress carries over between sessions without effort. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✗Hard to make progress without a guide

The game explains almost nothing about its goals or rules, and many puzzles feel obtuse until a player stumbles on the trick. Source: vaporlens.app, metacritic.com.

  • ✗Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking

The looping maze makes it easy to get lost, and players report backtracking through rooms to find the next unsolved puzzle. Source: vaporlens.app.

  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the player

First-person movement is smooth and does not fight the player, although the bright high-contrast visuals make some players dizzy. Source: vaporlens.app.
