Synopsis

A World War II naval action and strategy hybrid set in the Pacific, following a young American officer from Pearl Harbor to the Battle of Midway. You can take direct control of any ship, submarine or plane in your fleet, from PT boats to aircraft carriers, or command the whole force from a tactical map.

Reception

Critics praised the blend of hands-on action and fleet command in 2007, though GamesRadar flagged a steep learning curve and a short campaign, and GameCritics faulted long missions with no checkpoints. Players today still value it as a rare mix of naval combat and strategy, and many replay its challenge missions. The most common complaint in recent reviews is the aircraft controls, which players call twitchy and hard to aim. Online multiplayer no longer works, and players also mention stutter on modern hardware.

Design today

3/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Flying aircraft is the most common complaint in player reviews, with planes described as twitchy and hard to steer and aim, and a controller needs a preset layout applied with the keyboard and mouse first. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
Widescreen, ultrawide and 4K resolutions are supported, menus work with the mouse, and the tactical map and repair subscreens are kept simple. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamecritics.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
Missions have no checkpoints between their phases, and some run past half an hour, so a single failure restarts the whole mission. Source: gamecritics.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
A training mode walks through each unit type and the command map before the campaign, and the campaign introduces ships and planes gradually, though reviewers still note a steep learning curve. Source: gamecritics.com, gamesradar.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
The campaign is a short run of varied battles that change unit types from mission to mission, with optional challenge missions kept separate. Source: gamecritics.com, gamesradar.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
Aircraft handling fights the player: reviews call the flight controls frustrating and advise steering with the rudder instead of banking, and ship guns give no lead calculation, so shells must be aimed ahead of moving targets by hand. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
