How to get BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger running today
- If the game runs at half speed (locked near 30 FPS), turn off fullscreen optimizations for BBCT.exe in its Properties, Compatibility tab, and if that fails turn off Data Execution Prevention for BBCT.exe only (Windows Security, Exploit protection, program settings) and restart, as described on PCGamingWiki and in this Steam thread.
- If the game cannot get past the opening movie, set matching resolution values in Documents\ARC SYSTEM WORKS\BBCT\Config\DisplaySetting.cfg, following PCGamingWiki.
- To restore the missing Story Mode music, hex edit BBCT.exe so it calls .wav instead of .ogg, as shown on PCGamingWiki; this edit can cause error 51 on the Steam release.
Synopsis
BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is a 2D fighting game from Arc System Works, the first entry in the BlazBlue series, with hand-drawn sprites and a roster of twelve fighters. Each character has a unique Drive button mechanic on top of three standard attacks, and the game offers arcade, versus, training and a long branching story mode with a route for every character.

Reception
Critics rated it highly on consoles, with outlets such as IGN and Eurogamer scoring it around 9 out of 10 and praising a simple move set that still hides real depth, plus a lengthy, branching story mode. Some found parts of the story hard to follow and noted that not every route matters to the main plot. Steam players today still praise the sprite art, the music and how the controls feel, but complain that the Steam port lacks online play, has a small roster next to later entries, and can run at half speed or crash until it is configured.

Design today
4.5/5- Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardThree attack buttons plus one Drive button make up the whole scheme, XInput controllers are fully supported, and keys can be remapped. Source: honestgamers.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensThe game renders at an internal 1366×768 and scales that up, so sprites and text look soft on 1440p and 4K screens. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressStory progress and unlocks save automatically to the Documents folder, and a lost match only costs a few minutes. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressEach fighter has only a handful of special attacks and basic combos come from chaining standard attacks, so newcomers find their footing quickly in training mode. Source: honestgamers.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingMatches are short, and story mode moves along branching routes driven by choices and wins or losses, though a few comedic routes sit apart from the main plot. Source: honestgamers.com.
- Camera and movement never fight the playerIt is a side-view 2D fighter with a fixed camera, and multi-hit attacks can be canceled mid-animation, which keeps movement responsive. Source: honestgamers.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
