How to get Crysis Warhead running today

  1. Install the open-source C1-Launcher by extracting the Bin64 folder from the Warhead build into the game folder, then launch the game from it; it fixes several startup crashes (PCGamingWiki).
  2. If the game still crashes while saving, loading or starting a level, lower the graphics settings or resolution (PCGamingWiki).
  3. If the game ignores your monitor's refresh rate, apply the Refresh Rate Fix listed on PCGamingWiki.

Synopsis

Crysis Warhead is a standalone side story to Crysis, following the British soldier Psycho through his own mission on the same island while the main game's events unfold. You use a nanosuit that switches between armor, strength, speed and cloaking to tackle open jungle areas, vehicle sections and alien fights in your own way.

Reception

Critics felt it fixed most complaints about the original, crediting it with tighter pacing, smarter enemies, better alien battles and a stronger finale, while noting that the campaign runs only five to seven hours; it holds a PC Metascore of 84. On Steam it holds a Very Positive rating from about 3,800 reviews, and players still praise how well its sandbox combat has aged. The most common complaint today is random crashing on modern systems, which many players reduce but do not always eliminate with the community C1-Launcher. Unlike Crysis, it never got a remaster, and the Steam release does not include the Crysis Wars multiplayer.

  • Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The Steam release lacks the Crysis Wars multiplayer component, and its GameSpy online services have shut down (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Native widescreen, ultrawide and 4K, with black bars only in cutscenes (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
    Full XInput controller support (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • Intrusive DRM or a required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • Known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Random crashes to desktop on current Windows and hardware are widely reported; the C1-Launcher and lower settings reduce them but do not cure them for everyone (Steam Community, Steam Community).

5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Mouse and keyboard controls are fully remappable apart from the dual-wield right-hand trigger, and XInput controllers get full support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
Widescreen, ultrawide and 4K resolutions are supported natively, and the 4K support earned a silver award from the Widescreen Gaming Forum. Only the cutscenes keep black bars on ultrawide screens. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
The game autosaves at checkpoints and also allows quicksaves, which players lean on to soften the frequent crashes. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The four suit modes work exactly as in Crysis, and reviewers found the campaign easy to follow, with corridor sections used only to break up the open jungle fights; no source describes problems learning it. Source: eurogamer.net, ign.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
The five to seven hour campaign alternates open jungle fights, corridor sections and vehicle set pieces without repeating itself, and critics singled out its pacing as better than the original's. Source: eurogamer.net, ign.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
It is a first-person shooter with a 60 degree vertical default field of view, which can be raised through a config file edit. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
