How to get Crysis running today
- Launch the 64-bit version: when Steam shows the launch option window, pick the second (blank) option and tick Always use this option, as described on PCGamingWiki.
- Install C1-Launcher by extracting its Bin32 and Bin64 folders into the game folder; it replaces the executables and fixes startup crashes, including black screens and crashes on AMD processors.
Synopsis
A first-person shooter set on a tropical island where a U.S. special forces team investigates a strange discovery during a standoff with North Korean troops. You wear a nanosuit that can boost armor, speed, strength or make you briefly invisible, and you choose how to approach wide jungle areas, from stealth to all-out assault.
What people say
Critics at release were stunned by its graphics, physics and open-ended combat, and the game became a benchmark for PC hardware for years. Retrospectives still praise the nanosuit, the weapon customization and the open first two-thirds of the campaign. The most common criticism, then and now, is the final third, which turns into a linear fight against aliens that are less fun to battle than human soldiers; some players also find the strength mode fiddly and hit occasional progress-blocking bugs.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.

Design today: 4.5 / 5
- ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardShooting and suit switching feel good on mouse and keyboard, though the strength mode is fiddly and controller support on PC is limited. Source: bit-tech.net, pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThe HUD and suit menu are simple and the game supports modern resolutions; evidence on this point is thin. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressThe PC version offers quicksaves on top of frequent checkpoints, so little progress is lost; evidence on this point is thin. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThe suit was simplified during development so players would use it, and the opening missions introduce each mode; evidence on how players find it today is thin. Source: pcgames.de.
- ✗Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingAfter the open first two-thirds, the alien section turns linear and less interesting, a widely shared complaint. Source: bit-tech.net, pcgames.de.
- ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerFirst-person movement is smooth and the speed mode makes crossing the island easy; evidence on this point is thin. Source: bit-tech.net.
