How to get Far Cry 3 running today
- If the frame rate is low on a modern multi-core processor, limit the game to four cores or disable hyperthreading for it, for example with Process Lasso, as described on PCGamingWiki.
- Alternatively, run it through DXVK (Vulkan), which PCGamingWiki reports improves multithreaded performance.
- To remove the built-in negative mouse acceleration, install the Mouse Input Fixes mod.
- If the game crashes randomly, make its executables large address aware with the Large Address Aware tool.
Synopsis
An open-world first-person shooter in which a tourist named Jason Brody must rescue his friends from pirates on a lawless tropical island. You hunt animals to craft gear, climb radio towers to reveal the map and take over enemy outposts by stealth or force. The story follows Jason's slide from frightened victim to hardened killer.
What people say
Critics at release praised the lush island, the freedom in how to tackle fights and the menacing villain Vaas, and many called it the high point of the series. Players today still rate the core loop of towers, outposts and hunting as fun and less grindy than later open-world games. Common criticism points at a weaker second half after Vaas leaves the stage, repetitive side activities, timed missions and scripted boss fights. On PC, the game also needs tweaks to run smoothly on modern processors.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.

- ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardController play feels natural, but the mouse has built-in negative acceleration that caps fast turns unless patched by a mod. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensMenus and maps are clear and widescreen is supported, though some players shrink the large HUD and minimap. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressThe game autosaves at checkpoints and keeps one manual save per profile that bookmarks the current checkpoint, so little progress is lost. - ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThe game is described as more accessible than its predecessor, with a clear loop of towers, outposts and hunting that needs no guide. Source: purexbox.com.
- ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingPlayers describe the loop as still holding up and not too grindy, though some dislike its timed missions. Source: purexbox.com, steamcommunity.com.
- ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerFirst-person movement and traversal hold up, with no common complaints beyond the mouse acceleration issue. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
