How to get Dead Space running today
- Install the Dead Space Mouse Fix to remove forced mouse acceleration (it disables controller aiming).
- Turn off in-game V-sync, then cap the game at 60 FPS, either by placing the x32 d3d9.dll from DXVK in the game folder or with a frame limit in your GPU control panel; higher frame rates break doors, physics and quick-time events.
- Optionally add the Ishimura Stability Patch and the 4GB Mod to cut crashes.
- See PCGamingWiki for borderless window and other fixes.
Synopsis
Engineer Isaac Clarke boards the mining ship USG Ishimura after it goes silent, and finds the crew turned into twisted creatures. This third-person survival horror game has players cut off enemy limbs with improvised mining tools while scraping together ammo, repairing the ship and searching for a way out.
What people say
Critics at release praised the dense atmosphere, the sound design, the limb-cutting combat and the interface built into Isaac's suit, and it became a defining horror game of its generation. Players today still rate the mood and world design highly. The PC port draws steady complaints about forced mouse acceleration, input lag and a frame rate tied to V-sync, and many players find the second half repetitive, with a lot of backtracking through similar corridors. Some now point newcomers to the 2023 remake instead.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.

Design today: 3 / 5
- ✗Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardMouse acceleration is always on and V-sync adds input lag, and large controller dead zones make aiming imprecise, so players commonly need a fan fix. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, vaporlens.app.
- ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensHealth and stasis show on the suit itself and menus open in the game world, which players still praise, though some text is small at 4K. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressSaving happens only at save stations, but they are spread fairly often through each chapter and few players complain about lost progress; evidence on this point is thin. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressNo widespread complaints about getting lost or needing a guide turned up; objectives are simple ship tasks, though evidence on this point is thin. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✗Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingPlayers often describe the later chapters as drawn out, with repeated fetch tasks and backtracking through similar areas. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✗Camera and movement never fight the playerThe tight over-the-shoulder camera and narrow field of view on PC are a recurring complaint, with players calling aiming awkward. Source: vaporlens.app, pcgamingwiki.com.
