How to get Resident Evil 4 (2005) running today
What you need
- Required re4_tweaksRestores lost visual effects, adds raw mouse input, fixes quick-time event speed at 60 FPS and fixes the fullscreen refresh rate.
- Optional 7-Zip or the Windows built-in zip supportOpens the downloaded zip file; Windows 11 can also open zip files on its own.
Steps
Open a step for the full walkthrough.
-
Install re4_tweaks, which restores lost visual effects, adds raw mouse input, fixes quick-time event speed at 60 FPS and fixes the display refresh rate.
- Open the re4_tweaks releases page and download the zip file of the newest release (for example re4_tweaks1.9.1.zip) under Assets.
- Find the game folder: in Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files.
- Open the Bin32 folder inside the game folder.
- Extract the re4_tweaks folder, dinput8.dll and dinput8.ini from the zip into Bin32.
- Start the game and press F1 to open the re4_tweaks settings menu. If the menu appears, the mod is working.
- Change options either in that menu or by editing dinput8.ini in Bin32 with Notepad.
-
If fullscreen shows no picture on a high-refresh monitor, set FixDisplayMode to true in re4_tweaks' dinput8.ini (PCGamingWiki).
- In Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files, and open the Bin32 folder.
- Right-click dinput8.ini and open it with Notepad.
- Find the line FixDisplayMode and make sure it reads FixDisplayMode = true.
- Save the file and start the game. Fullscreen should now use your monitor's refresh rate instead of 60 Hz.
-
If mouse aiming feels erratic, turn on raw mouse input in re4_tweaks, or switch the aim mode to Modern or cap the game at 30 FPS.
- Open dinput8.ini in the Bin32 folder with Notepad.
- Make sure UseRawMouseInput is set to True, then save the file.
- Without re4_tweaks, open the game's options and set the aiming mode to Modern, then adjust the mouse sensitivity.
- If aiming is still jittery, set the frame rate to 30 FPS in the game's graphics options.
Synopsis
A third-person action horror game in which agent Leon Kennedy travels to a rural Spanish village to rescue the US president's kidnapped daughter. You fight hostile villagers, cultists and monsters with an over-the-shoulder aim, manage a grid-based weapons case and buy upgrades from a wandering merchant.
What people say
The original was hailed in 2005 as one of the best action games ever made, and critics reviewing this HD edition still praised its gameplay and pacing while calling the port bare-bones. Players today mostly agree it holds up, and some still prefer it to the 2023 remake. The recurring complaints are the stop-to-shoot controls that take time to relearn, hard and frequent quick-time events, PC mouse aiming problems and a 60 FPS mode that causes glitches.
