Synopsis
Devil May Cry 4 is a stylish action game from Capcom that introduces Nero, a young knight with a demonic arm, alongside the series hero Dante. Players carve through demons in mission-based levels, chaining sword, gun and grab attacks into combos that earn style ranks, and buy new moves with orbs collected along the way.

Reception
Critics praised the deep, fast combat, Nero's grappling arm and the spectacular bosses, while criticizing preset camera angles and a second half that sends Dante back through the same areas and bosses, for a PC Metascore of 78. On Steam it is Very Positive, with players calling the combat among the best in the genre and the PC version very well optimized. Common complaints today are the backtracking, the need for a gamepad and the delisting of this version in favor of the Special Edition.

Design today
3.5/5- Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardThe game has full XInput controller support with buttons rebindable per character, and combat responds precisely, but the mouse works only in menus and the PC version all but requires a gamepad. - Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensMenus and the combat display scale to any aspect ratio, including ultrawide and 4K, with Xbox button prompts. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressGenerous mid-mission checkpoints let the player continue just before the room where they died, and progress saves between missions. Source: shacknews.com.
- It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressAn optional automatic combo mode and automated upgrade paths help newcomers, and the opening missions are easy, though Shacknews notes the difficulty soon climbs to the series' usual demanding level. Source: gamesradar.com, shacknews.com.
- Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe second half of the campaign sends Dante back through Nero's levels in reverse with little change, and bosses are fought again, which reviewers and players cite as the game's main flaw. Source: steamcommunity.com, shacknews.com.
- Camera or movement fights the playerPreset camera angles can flip the direction of movement mid-room and sometimes hide enemies that attack from off screen. Source: shacknews.com.
