Reception

Critics at release praised the writing, voice acting and setting, giving the PC version a Metascore of 75 from 45 critics, but faulted the clumsy combat, dull stealth sections, simple puzzles and an ending that leaves the main plot unresolved. Adventure Gamers warned that the closing cliffhanger would leave many players feeling shortchanged. Players today still rate it Very Positive on Steam, with 84 percent of about 1,150 reviews positive, mostly for the story and characters. The story only continued years later in Dreamfall Chapters.

4.5/5
  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
It is a single-player game with no online features to lose, and the Steam release still includes the full game (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen and 4K are supported natively; ultrawide needs a hack (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
Controllers are fully supported with remapping, though prompts are generic and XInput triggers need XInput Plus (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
The Windows 10 Boot Camp crash and the cutscene freezes have simple documented workarounds, and the retail launch problem does not affect the Steam version (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

3/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Camera control with the mouse has strong negative acceleration that cannot be turned off, controller prompts are generic, and in combat an attack can take up to two seconds to land after the button press. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, rpgfan.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The game supports widescreen and 4K resolutions natively and has subtitles for all speech. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Saving is allowed anywhere at any time, and the game also autosaves at the start of every combat or stealth sequence. Source: adventuregamers.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Puzzles are simple and often have more than one solution, and the stealth scenes rest on easy-to-read timing patterns, though one puzzle hinges on an obscure, time-critical clue. Source: rpgfan.com, adventuregamers.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Fight and sneaking scenes drag and feel out of place, most key story moments play out in cutscenes rather than in play, and players note a lot of running back and forth. Source: rpgfan.com, gamingnexus.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
The third-person camera swings slowly behind the character and often needs manual correction, which gets in the way during fights; there is no field of view setting. Source: gamingnexus.com, adventuregamers.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
