How to get Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour running today

What you need

  • Not needed Extra tools or mod managerThe mouse delay fix is a setting in the graphics driver control panel. No mod manager is needed.
  • Optional EDuke32Free source port with modern features. Optional alternative to the official executable.
  • Optional e32wt StopgapCompatibility layer that makes World Tour content, such as the fifth episode and developer commentary, work in EDuke32. Only needed with EDuke32.

Steps

Open a step for the full walkthrough.

  1. If mouse aiming feels delayed, turn off vertical sync for the game in the graphics driver control panel, which removes the forced vsync and 60 FPS cap, as described in this Steam guide.
    1. Open the graphics driver control panel, for example by right-clicking the desktop.
    2. On Nvidia, go to Manage 3D settings and open the Program Settings tab.
    3. Select the game in the list, or add it if it is missing.
    4. Scroll down to Vertical sync, set it to Off and click Apply.
    5. On AMD or Intel, look for the equivalent vertical sync setting in their control panel.
    6. Start the game. The mouse delay should be gone and the frame rate uncapped.
  2. Alternatively, play the game files through the EDuke32 source port, which detects this edition automatically, together with the e32wt Stopgap for full World Tour support.
    1. Download the latest Windows build of EDuke32 from Dukeworld.
    2. In Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files.
    3. Extract the EDuke32 archive into that World Tour folder.
    4. Download the e32wt Stopgap and extract it into the same folder, or put its release .zip into the EDuke32 autoload folder and enable autoload.
    5. Start the game with eduke32.exe from that folder.
    6. In the EDuke32 console, use setvar voice and setvar commentary to choose the voice acting and developer commentary options.

Synopsis

Duke Nukem 3D is a first-person shooter in which a wisecracking action hero fights an alien invasion through Los Angeles, a space station and the surrounding wasteland. Levels are full of interactive objects, secrets and keycard doors, and the arsenal ranges from shotguns to shrink rays and pipe bombs. This anniversary release adds a new episode made by the original level designers, new music and re-recorded voice lines.

What people say

The 1996 original was widely praised for its interactive levels, inventive weapons and humor, and drew controversy for its sexual content and violence. This 2016 release received more mixed reviews: critics valued the faithful core game, its level design and the new episode, but some felt the new content and visual upgrades were modest and that the absence of earlier expansions hurt its value. Several reviewers also noted that the maze-like keycard hunts and backtracking now feel dated. Player feedback on this specific edition could not be gathered in depth.

Design today

3 / 5
  • ✗Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard

Forced vsync makes mouse aiming feel delayed out of the box, and the fix is listed as an essential improvement. Controllers are supported. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens

The menus and HUD are simple, and the game supports widescreen with Hor+ scaling and 4K. Ultrawide is not supported. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress

Saves are written locally and reviews raise no lost-progress problem. Steam Cloud sync is currently broken, so saves do not travel between PCs. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✗Hard to make progress without a guide

Levels are mazes of keycard doors, and reviewers note that missing a panel earlier leaves you stuck at a locked door with no hint. Source: opencritic.com.

  • ✗Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking

Critics single out the backtracking for keycards as the most dated part of the design. Source: opencritic.com.

  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the player

The first-person view is stable and fast, and widescreen scales horizontally, but the field of view cannot be changed without a source port. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
