Synopsis

Dungeon Lords is a third person action role-playing game from Wizardry designer D.W. Bradley, set in a fantasy kingdom under siege by a dark lord. Players build a character from several races and classes, then roam fields, towns and dungeons fighting waves of monsters in real time, alone or in co-op.

Reception

The 2005 original was released badly unfinished and full of bugs, with only ten save slots, and a paid Collector's Edition in 2006 fixed much of it. A 2012 review of the MMXII version, on which the Steam Edition builds, still found it buggy and sloppy, with tiny inventory bags, undescribed skills and spells, and basic fetch and kill quests. Steam players today rate the Steam Edition Mostly Positive, enjoying its old-school atmosphere and character building while reporting long-standing bugs, a clogged inventory and unplayable multiplayer.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Runs on Windows 11 without fan patches
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
GameSpy multiplayer is gone, but the current edition runs online co-op through Steamworks (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen crops the image vertically by default and needs a fan fix for a proper view (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
Controller support is partial, with no on-screen button prompts (PCGamingWiki).
  • Not Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
PCGamingWiki lists no open crash or progress issues for the current Steam Edition (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

1.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Both control modes are flawed: mouselook is smoother but hides when an object can be used, while point and click shows it but feels clumsy, and controller support is only partial. Source: gamebanshee.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Widescreen cuts the image vertically without a fan fix, inventory is split into six small bags of 20 items, and many skills and spells carry no description. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamebanshee.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Saving is unlimited at any time, and the game also autosaves on every map change and on quitting, though old autosaves pile up and need deleting. Source: gamebanshee.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
The journal holds only a single line per quest and does not update when an objective changes, and skills and spells come without explanations. Source: gamebanshee.com, gamebanshee.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Enemies spawn in an endless stream, quests are basic fetch and kill jobs, and the small inventory bags force a stop to sort items about every 15 minutes. Source: gamebanshee.com, gamebanshee.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
The third-person view is Vert- in widescreen by default, cropping the picture until a fan fix is applied, and the smoother mouselook mode gives no cue for objects that can be used. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamebanshee.com.
