Reception

The 2008 release drew little critical attention, and Metacritic lists no critic reviews for the PC version. Players rate it Very Positive on Steam, mostly for its relaxed driving and low hardware demands. Most also say Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator are better in every way. Common complaints are repetitive roads, a low top speed, keyboard-only steering and crashes on modern systems.

  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game is single-player only and no modes or content have been removed (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen and multi-monitor are supported, with a stretched HUD (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
Controller support is partial, with no full controller play or button prompts (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
PCGamingWiki lists no unresolved issue that crashes or blocks progress, though some recent players report crashes on loading on modern systems (PCGamingWiki, Steam Community).

Design today

3/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Steering by keyboard is digital and twitchy, and controller support is partial: players report that the analog sticks and triggers cannot be bound for steering or throttle without workarounds. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Widescreen and multi-monitor resolutions work, but the HUD is stretched rather than scaled, and 4K needs a Windows DPI compatibility override. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Players can save manually at any time, and the game autosaves after each finished delivery and whenever the driver rests at a sleep spot. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
A tutorial runs the first time the game is started, and the loop of picking up a load and driving it to the next city needs no further explanation. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Deliveries repeat the same few highways with little change in scenery, and the truck's low top speed stretches long hauls, complaints repeated across user reviews. Source: metacritic.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Cab and exterior views can be switched freely and looked around with the mouse, with optional TrackIR and Tobii head tracking. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
