Synopsis

Faces of War is a World War II real-time tactics game covering the Allied, Soviet and German sides in three campaigns. You command small squads and individual vehicles with no base building, managing each soldier's weapons, ammunition and inventory. A direct control mode lets you steer a single soldier or tank with the keyboard and aim by hand.

Reception

Critics were split, giving it a Metacritic score of 67. Reviews praised its destructible environments and detailed simulation of soldiers and vehicles, but faulted an inflexible camera, clumsy direct control, a long and unhelpful tutorial, linear scripted missions and bugs. Players were kinder, rating it Very Positive on Steam, and many see it as the start of the Men of War series. The game has since been pulled from sale on Steam, GOG and ZOOM. Its depth rewards patience, but newcomers face a steep, awkward learning curve.

  • Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game is no longer sold on Steam, and GOG and ZOOM delisted it on September 8, 2026. Online multiplayer ran on GameSpy and is gone, leaving LAN play (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen and ultrawide resolutions are supported natively, though the view is cropped (Vert-) and the interface does not scale (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
Keys can be remapped, but there is no controller support (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable

  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
PCGamingWiki lists no unresolved crash issues, though some Steam players hit crashes when the game saves, which one player fixed by turning off an antivirus ransomware shield (PCGamingWiki, Steam Community).

  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Direct control moves units with the keyboard, switching between views needs a separate key, and simple jobs like refueling a tank take many steps. Squad commands are unavailable while in direct control, so players must keep switching modes. Source: worthplaying.com, bit-tech.net.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The interface does not scale with resolution and becomes extremely small at 4K, and widescreen uses a cropped Vert- view. Friendly and enemy units are hard to tell apart without hovering the cursor over them. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, worthplaying.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Missions autosave at set points and players can also save progress themselves, with Steam Cloud sync. Several players report crashes when saving or autosaving; one traced it to an antivirus ransomware shield, but the fix did not work for everyone. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
The tutorial is long, broken up by cutscenes and exposition, and skips key ideas, so reviewers recommend reading the manual afterward. Source: worthplaying.com, bit-tech.net.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Missions are linear and scripted, with routine objectives and some stretches spent holding off endless waves. A missed trigger can force a reload to an earlier save. Source: worthplaying.com, bit-tech.net.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
The overhead camera is inflexible, controlled awkwardly through both the mouse and numpad, and often gets blocked by objects in the scene. Source: worthplaying.com.
