How to get Falcon 4.0 running today

  1. Use dgVoodoo 2 as a Glide wrapper to get hardware acceleration on modern Windows, as described on PCGamingWiki.
  2. For a stable modern experience with widescreen support, install the free Falcon BMS overhaul on top of the Steam copy.

Synopsis

Falcon 4.0 is a hardcore F-16 combat flight simulator set in a war on the Korean peninsula. Players fly training lessons, single missions, instant action or a dynamic campaign in which ground and air battles play out on their own and every sortie shapes the front line. Realism settings scale from simplified flight to a detailed model of the real jet's systems.

Reception

Critics in 1998 praised its ambition, detailed avionics and living campaign, and it holds a Metascore of 85, though reviewers noted the launch build was badly bugged until patches arrived. Its depth came with a manual close to 600 pages. Steam players now rate it mainly as the required base for Falcon BMS rather than a game to play on its own. Recent reviews also object to a price increase for a decades-old product.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
Multiplayer runs over LAN and direct IP, so no shutdown of official servers affects it (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen and 4K need the Falcon BMS mod (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
Keys can be remapped and game controllers are supported (PCGamingWiki).
  • Not Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • Known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Purple textures, unreadable text and menu glitches remain unresolved on Windows 7 and later, and software rendering runs very slowly (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

3/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The simulator maps nearly every F-16 cockpit function to keys and expects a HOTAS with many buttons; controllers work but there is no full controller support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
There is no native widescreen support, and on Windows 7 and later text becomes unreadable and textures turn purple under hardware rendering. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Campaigns are saved as files in their own save folder and can be reloaded later, so a war can continue over many sessions; saving during a sortie was not confirmed. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
A 31-lesson tutorial, open-ended training missions and scalable realism ease players in, but even the 1998 GamesFirst review warned that learning the jet takes a major time commitment, and current players send newcomers to manuals, videos and community guides. Source: gamesfirst.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Training, instant action and single missions offer short sessions, while the dynamic campaign has no scripted missions, so players fly sorties in an ongoing war instead of a fixed chain. Source: gamesfirst.com, pmc.editing.wiki.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Cockpit and external views are available and the field of view can be adjusted. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
