How to get X-COM: Enforcer running today

  1. If the game hangs at startup with the Direct3D renderer, switch back to the default Glide renderer or run it through Creative ALchemy, as described on PCGamingWiki.
  2. For widescreen, set the resolution in XCom.ini and raise the field of view, following PCGamingWiki.
  3. If the camera misbehaves, map the XFreeLookToggle alias to a free key in User.ini (PCGamingWiki).

Synopsis

A third-person arcade shooter set in the X-COM universe, built on the Unreal Tournament engine. You play a combat robot sent by a scientist to clear alien invaders from towns, bases and research sites, destroying the transporters that spawn them. Points and data chips collected in each mission unlock new weapons and upgrades.

Reception

Critics at release found it a quick, simple shooter that strayed far from the strategy roots of X-COM, and the Metascore sits at 65. Reviewers pointed to a thin story, similar mission structures and an easy difficulty, while some enjoyed the fast pace and weapon unlocks. Players today mostly treat it as a curiosity from the X-COM bundle, mocking the narrator who repeats a handful of lines and the stiff third-person controls. A few still find it a fun, mindless blast once the bigger guns unlock.

Runs today

4/5
  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The campaign is complete, and multiplayer still works over LAN and direct IP (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen is limited, needs an ini edit and is Vert- (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
Controllers are supported with remapping, though not for every menu (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
The Direct3D startup hang is avoided with the default Glide renderer, and no other crash or progress blocker is listed (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

1.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Moving the camera turns the robot itself, the camera cannot tilt up or down, and players describe the shooting as stiff and dated. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Widescreen support is limited and needs an ini edit, the default Glide renderer only offers 4:3 resolutions, and there are no subtitles. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
Saving during a mission is not possible; the game saves only after a mission is complete, so failing sends you back to the start of the level. Source: gameswelt.de.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The scientist narrator points the way to each objective, and the simple shoot, collect and upgrade loop explains itself. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Missions follow nearly the same pattern of destroying transporters to open the next area, and the levels blur together over the campaign. Source: gameswelt.de, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
The camera sits at a fixed angle behind the robot, and in some levels it points where nothing ahead is visible. Source: steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
