How to get Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition running today

What you need

  • Required Fallout Anniversary PatcherMakes the game use up to 4 GB of memory, sets it to version 1.7.0.3 that FOSE supports and loads FOSE automatically. Downloading from Nexus Mods needs a free account.
  • Optional Ogg Vorbis LibrariesUpdated audio libraries that fix sound stutter and an audio memory leak; made for New Vegas but also work in Fallout 3.

Steps

Open a step for the full walkthrough.

  1. Install the Fallout Anniversary Patcher, which makes the game use up to 4 GB of memory and fixes many random crashes on modern systems. No mod manager is needed.
    1. Start the game once from Steam so it creates its settings files, then quit.
    2. Download the patcher from its Nexus Mods page.
    3. Find the game folder: in Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files. It contains Fallout3.exe.
    4. Extract the downloaded files into that folder.
    5. Double-click Patcher.exe and wait until it finishes.
    6. From now on, start the game with Fallout3.exe or through Steam. Do not use fose_loader.exe, since the patched game loads FOSE by itself.
  2. If the game still crashes, turn on threaded AI and limit hardware threads in FALLOUT.ini (PCGamingWiki).
    1. Press Windows + R, type %userprofile%\Documents\My Games\Fallout3 and press Enter.
    2. Open FALLOUT.ini with Notepad.
    3. Press Ctrl + F and search for bUseThreadedAI.
    4. Change bUseThreadedAI=0 to bUseThreadedAI=1.
    5. Make a new line below it and type iNumHWThreads=2.
    6. Save the file. If the game still crashes, change the line to iNumHWThreads=1.
  3. For audio stutter and an audio memory leak, install the updated Ogg Vorbis Libraries, which also work for Fallout 3.
    1. Download the files from the Nexus Mods page.
    2. In Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files. Use the main game folder, not the Data folder.
    3. Make a backup copy of the existing vorbis DLL files in that folder.
    4. Extract the DLL files from the download into the main game folder.
    5. Choose Replace when Windows asks, then start the game.

Synopsis

An open-world role-playing game set in the ruins of Washington, D.C., two centuries after a nuclear war. You leave the underground vault where you grew up to search for your father, then roam the Capital Wasteland taking on quests, picking fights and making choices that shape how towns and factions treat you. This edition bundles all five expansions.

What people say

Critics at release praised the bleak, detailed world, the dark humor and the V.A.T.S. targeting system that pauses combat to aim at body parts. The main complaints were bugs, stiff animation and an abrupt original ending, which the Broken Steel expansion later reworked. Players today still rate the exploration and environmental storytelling highly, but many find the real-time shooting loose and inaccurate, the colors muddy and the many fetch quests dated. On PC, crashes remain a known issue that usually needs a patch or a config tweak.

Design today

  • ✗Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard

Real-time shooting feels loose and inaccurate, mouse acceleration is on by default, and controller support is only partial. Combat leans on V.A.T.S. to feel good. Source: kotaku.com, pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✗Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens

Everything runs through the Pip-Boy menu, so even swapping to a grenade means digging through screens with no quick-select. Source: kotaku.com.

  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress

The game allows saving at any time outside combat, has quicksave and autosaves on area changes and sleep, so little progress is lost. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress

The Vault 101 prologue walks through movement, combat, V.A.T.S. and the Pip-Boy, and quest markers keep the main path clear. Source: kotaku.com.

  • ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking

Exploration keeps turning up new places and stories. The vault opening is slow and many side quests are fetch errands, but the main path never forces long backtracking. Source: tabertimes.com, kotaku.com.

  • ✗Camera or movement fights the player

There is no sprint, so crossing the large map on foot feels slow, and the stiff third-person camera is awkward next to current open-world games. Source: kotaku.com.
