How to get S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat running today

  1. If the Steam version will not start on Windows 10 or 11, open Windows Security, go to App & browser control, then Exploit protection settings, add a program setting for xrEngine.exe and turn off Force randomization for images (Mandatory ASLR).
  2. If xrEngine.exe runs in Task Manager but no game appears, delete or rename pctrlchk.dll in the game's Bin folder.
  3. For mouse delay and stutter, set lighting to Static Lighting in the video options.
  4. As an alternative, run the open-source OpenXRay engine, which improves compatibility with modern systems.

Synopsis

An open-world survival shooter from GSC Game World set in the radioactive Zone around Chernobyl. Players take the role of an undercover agent who explores ruined towns and wilderness, takes jobs from rival stalkers, scavenges gear and dodges deadly anomalies, mutants and emissions.

What people say

Critics in 2009 and 2010 called it the most polished entry in the series so far, praising its bleak, beautiful atmosphere even as they noted dated visuals, shaky AI, weak dialogue and guns that feel more like a simulator than a shooter. Players today still rate the atmosphere and freedom of the Zone highly and often call it the most stable of the original trilogy. Common complaints are the lack of any tutorial, crashes when saving or loading, a slow story and a world that can feel spread out. Many players recommend fan mods to improve it, though this entry judges the unmodded game.
