How to get S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl running today
- If the Steam version does not launch on Windows 10 or 11, add an Exploit protection exception in Windows Security for XR_3DA.exe and turn off Mandatory ASLR (PCGamingWiki).
- For stutter and mouse delay, set lighting to Static Lighting.
- To fix broken v-sync, opt into the pre-1.0007 beta branch in Steam.
Synopsis
A first-person shooter with survival elements set in the Zone, the irradiated area around the Chernobyl power plant. As an amnesiac stalker known as the Marked One, you search for a man you are meant to kill while scavenging gear, avoiding anomalies and dealing with rival factions and mutants. The Zone is split into large open areas you can roam, with several endings depending on your choices.
What people say
Critics praised its bleak, convincing atmosphere and freeform survival play while faulting bugs, rough edges and a long, troubled development. Players still rate its story and atmosphere as the best in the trilogy and value its several endings. Common complaints today are frequent crashes, very inaccurate weapons, a dated, cramped inventory, unclear objectives and repetitive side quests. Many players recommend fan patches or mods, which are outside the unmodded verdicts here.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.
