How to get Far Cry running today
- Install SilentPatch to restore water reflections on modern Windows, make the VSync option work and fix common crashes.
- Install the Far Cry Widescreen Fix for a proper Hor+ widescreen image and an adjustable field of view.
- If enemies spot you through tents or foliage, apply the Unofficial Patch 1.41 and the Tent AI Bug Fix listed on PCGamingWiki.
Synopsis
Far Cry is a first-person shooter set on a chain of tropical islands, where former special forces soldier Jack Carver hunts for a missing journalist and uncovers a mercenary army guarding a secret research project. Its large outdoor levels let you approach enemy camps from many directions, on foot, by vehicle or by boat, using stealth or open combat.

Reception
Critics in 2004 hailed it as a technical showcase with smart enemy AI, wide-open levels and strong physics, giving it a PC Metascore of 89. Players today still rate it Very Positive on Steam and praise the setting and freedom, but many call it punishing even on Normal, with enemies spotting the player from far away and checkpoints spaced too widely. The shift from human mercenaries to mutant enemies in the later levels is a common complaint, and several players recommend an older or patched build because the Steam version's final patch makes enemies see through foliage.

Design today
2.5/5- Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardMouse and keyboard controls are standard for the genre, with lean keys and options to turn off mouse acceleration and smoothing. There is no controller support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensThe game has no proper widescreen support: modern resolutions give a cropped Vert- image unless a fan widescreen fix is installed. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, thirteenag.github.io.
- Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lostProgress is saved only at checkpoints, which players find too far apart; quicksaving needs console commands or a mod. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Hard to make progress without a guideThe game explains little about how enemies detect the player, so players pass around tips on cover and scouting, and many find even Normal difficulty harsh. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe campaign is a linear run of large, varied outdoor levels with no grind or forced backtracking, though the late mutant-heavy levels drag for many players. Source: metacritic.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Camera or movement fights the playerThe game has no field of view setting, the picture narrows on widescreen displays (Vert-) until a fan widescreen fix is installed, and at high frame rates physics glitches appear, especially when climbing off ladders.
