Synopsis

A loot-driven action role-playing game set in a near-future London overrun by demons, made by former Diablo developers. You pick one of six classes, take quests in fortified subway stations and fight through randomly built streets and tunnels in first or third person. Each class mixes guns, melee or magic, and the loop centers on gathering and upgrading gear.

Reception

The 2007 release earned a PC Metascore of 70; critics liked the class variety, loot and mix of shooter and role-playing combat, but faulted repetitive random levels, a cramped inventory and many bugs at launch. The Escapist saw promise held back by the troubled retail release. The 2018 Steam version is rated Mixed, with 57 percent of about 2,200 reviews positive, and players point to the removed multiplayer and a framerate bug that has never been fixed.

Design today

3/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Keys can be remapped and mouse sensitivity and inverted look are adjustable; there is no controller support, so it plays only with mouse and keyboard. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The grid inventory fills quickly and forces constant item shuffling, upgrades need each component dragged in by hand, and players still say inventory management eats much of their time. Source: gamingnexus.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
Progress is kept automatically rather than in save slots, and quitting and reloading mid-level puts the character back where the level must be crossed and cleared again, which also happens when a bug leaves the character stuck. Source: gamingnexus.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The story is told entirely through quests picked up in the subway stations, which point the player to the next area, so a guide is not needed. Source: escapistmagazine.com, gamingnexus.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Randomly built levels reuse the same streets, tunnels and ruins, and reviewers found the loop turns repetitive within a few hours. Source: escapistmagazine.com, gamingnexus.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The camera is free in a full 3D world and switches between first person for guns and third person for melee automatically. Source: escapistmagazine.com.
