Synopsis

Hidden & Dangerous 2 is a Second World War tactical shooter in which you lead a small team of British SAS soldiers behind enemy lines in Europe, Africa and Asia. You pick your squad and gear, then play missions of sabotage, rescue and infiltration in first or third person, switching between soldiers or ordering them from a tactical map. This release includes the Sabre Squadron expansion.

Reception

Critics at release were divided: some praised its open missions and squad tactics as among the best of the era, while others found it frustrating and buggy, and the expansion drew complaints about weak AI. Steam players today are very positive, liking the varied missions, multiple routes and capable squadmates. Common complaints are complicated controls, enemies that swing between oblivious and deadly accurate, dated graphics, and occasional crashes and broken mission triggers.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Runs on Windows 11 without fan patches
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The official online service is gone, so internet play needs the fan OpenSpy client, while LAN and direct IP still work (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
PCGamingWiki lists widescreen, ultrawide and 4K as available only through a fan widescreen fix (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
PCGamingWiki lists no controller support (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Players report the game running on Windows 11 with only the widescreen fix, though a crash in one mission has a workaround of entering by another route (Steam Community, Steam Community).

Design today

3.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Players find the controls complicated, with awkward grenade throws, no aiming while moving and loose vehicle driving, and there is no controller support. Source: steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The game has no native widescreen support, so a fan widescreen fix is needed for a correct picture on modern screens. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
How often you can save depends on the difficulty: the lower settings allow saving at any point in a mission, while the higher ones limit saves, and there is a single save slot, so a botched objective can mean restarting the mission. Source: steamcommunity.com, gog.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
An opening training mission walks through movement, weapons, equipment and squad orders before the campaign starts. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Missions vary between infiltration, sabotage and defense, with several routes through each level and little filler between them. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Players can switch freely between first and third person views for each soldier, and reviews raise no camera complaints. Source: steamcommunity.com.
