How to get Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising running today

  1. If the game shows a black screen or closes at launch, right-click HostileWaters.exe and HostileSetup.exe in the game folder, open Properties, and set compatibility mode to Windows 8, using Change settings for all users so Steam does not reset it (Steam Community).
  2. If only a quarter of the screen shows, set the high DPI scaling override in the same Compatibility tab to Application.
  3. For heavy stutter or a black screen that persists, copy the x86 files of the dgVoodoo2 wrapper into the game folder and pick its device in HostileSetup.exe (Steam Community).
  4. If the launcher options are grayed out, add the InstallPath registry value described on PCGamingWiki.

Synopsis

Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising mixes vehicle action with real-time strategy, putting the player in command of an old nanotech carrier that builds tanks, hovercraft and helicopters from salvaged energy. Vehicles can be given soulcatcher chips that carry the minds of dead soldiers, who then follow orders and chat during battle, or the player can drive and fly any unit directly. A story campaign of island missions pits the carrier against a group of old tyrants trying to retake the world.

Reception

Critics rated it highly in 2001, praising the story, the cutscenes and the blend of hands-on combat with light strategy, though IGN noted AI flaws and a sometimes awkward command interface. It sold poorly and gained a cult following later. Steam players still call it a unique and underrated classic with memorable voiced pilots, while pointing to dated graphics, low resolutions, the lack of multiplayer or skirmish and trouble starting it on modern Windows.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game was single-player only, and the full campaign remains on Steam and GOG (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen resolutions are limited and cut off the bottom of the building interface (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
There is no controller support, although keys can be remapped (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Black screens at launch on Windows 11 are common in 2025 and 2026, but Windows 8 compatibility mode or the dgVoodoo2 wrapper gets the game running for most players (Steam Community).

Design today

3.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
There is no controller support, and giving orders while piloting means pressing a unit number and steering a menu with the same WASD keys used to drive, which players and IGN call archaic and awkward. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, metacritic.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The game targets 4:3 resolutions, widescreen modes cut off the bottom of the building interface, and only War Room dialogue has subtitles. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
The manual says the game can be saved at any time from the Options Room with F3, with a quick save on F6 and quick load on F7; one player review notes the slots are fewer than the missions and there is no mission select after the campaign. Source: store.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The manual and Force Gaming describe the first missions as tutorials that teach control of a single unit, then giving orders from a vehicle and from the War Room, and later briefings explain each objective. Source: store.steampowered.com, forceforgood.co.uk, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Missions vary between assaults, defense and one stealth task, and base building is kept to a minimum, though reviewers single out one mission as tedious. Source: forceforgood.co.uk, steamcommunity.com, metacritic.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The War Room map can be rotated, zoomed and scrolled, the game pauses in the War, Construction and Options Rooms, and GameRevolution found the order interface intuitive and the same in both views, though Force Gaming says switching takes getting used to. Source: store.steampowered.com, gamerevolution.com, forceforgood.co.uk.
