Synopsis
A large-scale online military shooter set in a fictional conflict in Indonesia, where teams of up to 150 players fight across huge jungle and island maps. Players pick a class, ride helicopters, boats and armored vehicles to the front, and capture bases together. This bundle includes Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising and its Escalation expansion.
Reception
Critics rated it highly in 2004, with a PC Metascore of 82, praising the sheer scale of its battles and combined-arms teamwork, while noting long trips to the fighting, bugs, camping and the lack of a real single-player mode. Steam reviews remain Very Positive from veterans who say few shooters have matched its transport-driven battles. Many recent reviews, though, warn newcomers that the official NovaWorld online service is hard or impossible to join without an old account, so multiplayer now depends on community-run lobbies and mods.

Design today
3.5/5- Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardInfantry play uses standard mouse and keyboard shooter controls, and helicopters auto-hover with simple altitude keys; ground vehicles with three gears are clumsier, and there is no controller support. Source: worthplaying.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensResolutions stop at 1920×1080 unless game.cfg is edited, and PCGamingWiki lists 4K and ultrawide as unsupported, so the interface is not made for today's high-resolution screens. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressPlay is built around online and LAN matches and co-op missions rather than a campaign, so there is no story progress to lose. Source: worthplaying.com.
- It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressAbout a dozen training lessons cover movement, shooting, capturing bases, flying helicopters and using launchers before players join a match. Source: worthplaying.com.
- Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingHeadquarters spawns sit far behind the front and forward posts admit one player at a time, so critics noted that much of a match goes to traveling between locations. Source: worthplaying.com.
- Camera and movement never fight the playerInfantry movement is a standard first-person view, and the minimap draws a line to the next waypoint, though driving ground vehicles over narrow bridges takes practice. Source: worthplaying.com.
