Synopsis

Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns is a fantasy real-time strategy game from TimeGate Studios in which immortal heroes fight to rebuild a fallen world. Instead of single soldiers, players recruit companies of a front line, support units and a captain or hero, and expand by founding towns and holding supply lines. A story campaign, scenarios and multiplayer round it out.

Reception

Critics in 2001 praised its company system, economy and strategic focus, and it holds a PC Metascore of 87 from 21 reviews. Steam players rate it Very Positive and value how it trades frantic clicking for planning. Older negative reviews describe choppy, unplayable performance on modern Windows, a problem the 2026 update set out to fix.

Design today

4.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Units move and fight as self-managing companies that replenish in friendly territory, so the mouse-driven controls need far less clicking than a typical RTS. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The default branch shows the game letterboxed at its original proportions with the classic stretched interface; the crisp HD interface, 4K support and UI scale slider exist only in an experimental branch. Source: steamstore-a.akamaihd.net, steamstore-a.akamaihd.net, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Games can be saved and loaded freely, saves carry over to the modernized version, and the experimental branch adds a timed autosave. Source: steamstore-a.akamaihd.net, steamstore-a.akamaihd.net.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Players describe it as easy to pick up and a gentle first RTS, with depth that unfolds as the campaign goes on. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Matches center on expanding a battle line and holding towns rather than mass-producing units, and players praise the campaigns as lengthy without being a clickfest. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The isometric map scrolls freely and the updated minimap lets players click or drag to jump anywhere; zoom is added in the experimental branch. Source: steamstore-a.akamaihd.net, steamstore-a.akamaihd.net.
