- For borderless windowed mode, native higher resolutions or skipping the launcher, install MGSM2Fix by copying d3d11.dll, MGSM2Fix.asi and MGSM2Fix.ini into the game folder (PCGamingWiki).
Synopsis
Metal Gear Solid is a stealth action game in which the soldier Solid Snake infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility on a snowbound Alaskan island to stop a rogue special forces unit. Snake sneaks past guards using a radar, cover and gadgets, talks with his support team over the codec radio, and faces a string of memorable bosses between long cutscenes.
Reception
The original 1998 game is widely counted among the most influential stealth games, and reviews of the 2023 Master Collection still praise its story and atmosphere. The Master Collection Vol. 1 bundle as a whole holds a Top Critic Average of 73 on OpenCritic, held back by a bare port with few visual upgrades and launch-era bugs such as frame rate drops. Recent Steam players are largely positive but often call the controls and camera dated, and several say the game runs better through emulation than through this port.

Runs today
4/5- Sold or given away today by an official source
- Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
- ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connectionNo source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
- All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)The game is single player with nothing online to lose, though the Red Cross symbol on medicine and a few pictures were altered, which MGSM2Fix can restore (PCGamingWiki).
- No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreenThe game is pillarboxed at 4:3; widescreen and ultrawide need the MGSM2Fix hack, which stretches the interface (PCGamingWiki).
- Full controller support or remappable controlsControllers work through Steam Input and keyboard keys are fully rebindable since Ver.3.0.0 (PCGamingWiki).
- Steam Deck Verified or Playable
- No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
- No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
- No known game-breaking bugs in the current versionPCGamingWiki lists fixes for the known controller and black video problems and no open issue that crashes or blocks progress (PCGamingWiki).
Design today
3/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardSnake moves with old tank-style controls built for a PlayStation pad, which a 2023 review calls the hardest part to adjust to. Full keyboard rebinding only arrived with the Ver.3.0.0 patch. Source: fingerguns.net, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThe game runs pillarboxed at 4:3 with internal resolution options up to 2560×1920, so the codec text and menus stay sharp on modern displays. The launcher renders at 1920×1080 and an optional scanline filter is available. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressPlayers save by calling Mei Ling on the codec, with 120 slots across virtual memory cards. One 2023 review warned that these saves only reached disk after quitting through the collection menu, so a crash could lose them. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
- It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThe included Integral release adds VR training missions for practicing sneaking and weapons apart from the main story. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, fingerguns.net.
- Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingLate in the game the PAL key section forces repeated trips across the base, and an earlier stretch sends Snake back for a sniper rifle, both singled out as poorly aged in a 2023 review. Source: fingerguns.net.
- Camera or movement fights the playerThe fixed camera angles of the 1998 original are unchanged, and recent Steam players still name the camera and controls as the parts that have aged worst. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, fingerguns.net.
