How to get Need for Speed: Undercover running today
- If the game runs at a low frame rate, set nfs.exe to compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3 (PCGamingWiki).
- If a copy updated to patch 1.0.1.18 freezes after loading a profile on a CPU with more than 4 physical cores, limit the processor count to 8 (or 4) in MSCONFIG's advanced boot options, or spoof the core count with Special K, and undo the change after playing; the Steam build is v1.0.0.1 (PCGamingWiki).
- Install NFS Undercover FusionFix for correct resolution detection, windowed modes, controller icons and better shadows (PCGamingWiki).
- For an Xbox or PlayStation controller, install NFS XtendedInput, which fixes the poor XInput support (PCGamingWiki).
Synopsis
Need for Speed: Undercover is an open-world street racing game in which an undercover police officer joins a car theft and racing ring in the fictional Tri-City Bay Area. Players win sprints, circuits and highway battles, take on police pursuit jobs, and spend winnings on new cars and upgrades. A GPS menu lets players jump straight to the next event.

Reception
Critics in 2008 liked the return of Most Wanted style police chases and the sunny visual style, but called the game far too easy for its first hours, with rubber-band AI and very forgiving handling. Eurogamer faulted an appalling frame rate, and Trusted Reviews, testing the Xbox 360 version, also found juddering corners and empty streets. Steam players still rate it Mostly Positive, and many recommend it for its cast and cars. The common complaints today are that EA delisted it in 2021, that the Steam copy is an older build than the final patch, and that it needs fan fixes to run smoothly on modern PCs.

Design today
3/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardKeyboard keys can be remapped, but XInput controllers such as Xbox and PlayStation pads are poorly supported, with no proper button icons or stick sensitivity until fan mods are installed. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThe menus are clean and quick, with GPS event selection and shortcut upgrade packages, and widescreen resolutions are supported out of the box. Ultrawide and 4K need fan fixes. Source: eurogamer.net, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressProgress is kept in a player profile, and a failed race or pursuit can be restarted at once instead of driving back to the start. Source: eurogamer.net, pcgamingwiki.com.
- It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressEvents are picked from a GPS map with a one-button jump to the next race, and the early events are so easy that no guide is needed. Source: trustedreviews.com, eurogamer.net.
- Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe first ten or so hours of races are trivially easy because rival cars slow down whenever the player crashes, and the game only becomes a real contest after level 10. Source: eurogamer.net, trustedreviews.com.
- Camera or movement fights the playerModern PCs see frame rate drops without a compatibility fix, critics at release reported the frame rate juddering in corners, and the field of view can only be changed with a mod. Source: eurogamer.net, pcgamingwiki.com.
