How to get Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising running today
- On video cards with more than 2 GB of VRAM the game caps the resolution at 1280×1024; install the OF:DR v1.02 Resolution Fix & Modding Enabled patch listed on PCGamingWiki to unlock widescreen and higher resolutions.
- If HUD elements are too small to read at 4K, use dgVoodoo 2 to scale the HUD, as PCGamingWiki suggests.
- If the game crashes to desktop a few minutes after starting, turn Windows networking off while playing alone (PCGamingWiki).
Synopsis
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is a military shooter set on a fictional island where US Marines fight a Chinese invasion. Players lead a four-man fire team through large open maps, giving orders, managing wounds and choosing how to approach each objective. The campaign can be played alone or in co-op.

Reception
Critics praised its large open battlefields, tense firefights and more realistic approach than most shooters of its time. Reviews faulted the slow radial command menu, squad mates that ignore orders, sparse checkpoints, long walks between objectives and a thin tutorial, and many fans of the original game felt it was simplified. Players today still run co-op over virtual LAN tools since the official servers closed in 2012, and the Steam version needs a fan fix to get past its resolution cap on modern video cards.

Design today
1/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardSquad orders run through a radial menu that is slow in combat, with some commands two layers deep, and controller buttons cannot be remapped. Source: tentonhammer.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensSeveral HUD elements do not scale and can be unreadable at 4K, and on many video cards the stock game caps the resolution at 1280×1024. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lostProgress saves only at checkpoints, which can be far apart and are fewer on Hardcore, so a failed fight can mean replaying long stretches. Source: tentonhammer.com, eurogamer.net.
- Hard to make progress without a guideOnly a few short prompts appear at the start, with no weapon overview and no proper lesson for vehicles or helicopters. Source: tentonhammer.com.
- Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingObjectives are spread across huge maps, and much of each mission is spent walking to the next fight, since running tires the marines quickly and vehicles are not always at hand. Source: eurogamer.net.
- Camera or movement fights the playerThe default field of view is a narrow 38 degrees vertical with no in-game slider, so changing it takes a hex edit. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
