How to get Order of War running today

  1. Install the official memory fix: in the Steam library, open the game's Properties, choose Betas, and select the memory_fix branch (PCGamingWiki).
  2. If loading a save still fails or crashes, lower the graphics settings and try again (Steam discussion).

Synopsis

Order of War is a World War II real-time strategy game from Wargaming.net with an American campaign on the Western Front and a German campaign in the East. Players command whole companies of infantry, tanks and artillery rather than single units, capture control points for reinforcements, and call in artillery and air strikes across large battlefields.

Reception

Critics were split at release, and the game holds a PC Metascore of 69: Gaming Nexus rated it highly for its scale, clear objectives and solid tutorial, while HonestGamers found it average and short on new ideas beyond its presentation. Its sweeping cinematic camera and big battles drew the most praise, and slow troop movement, vague objectives and thin multiplayer drew complaints. Players today still enjoy its fast, division-scale battles and fire support, but many report out-of-memory crashes during long missions and call the unit AI basic.

Design today

4.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Orders go to whole companies with mouse and keyboard, units use their own abilities, keys can be remapped, and the space bar pauses the battle so orders can be given. There is no controller support. Source: gamingnexus.com, honestgamers.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The game supports widescreen at up to 4K, and its interface stays informative without crowding the screen, with a key to hide it entirely. It runs only in exclusive fullscreen, and enemy units show no health bars. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamingnexus.com, honestgamers.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Players save in the middle of a mission and load those saves later, as a 2025 thread on the memory patch shows, and the campaign rewards replays on higher difficulty through its upgrade system. Source: steamcommunity.com, gamingnexus.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
An optional three-part tutorial covers basic training, a firing range and tactics, and on-map arrows show where to attack and defend. Source: gamingnexus.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Maps are large, soldiers move slowly with no way to speed up time, and some objectives are unclear enough to cause wandering and lost units. Source: honestgamers.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The camera moves freely from close to the troops up to a high overhead view. The optional cinematic camera blocks orders while active and sometimes clips through units, but it never has to be used. Source: honestgamers.com, gamingnexus.com.
