How to get Painkiller: Overdose running today

  1. Create an empty folder named Maps inside the game's Data folder, and turn off vertical sync for the game in the graphics driver's control panel, to cut the very long loading times (PCGamingWiki).
  2. Optionally install the Overdose Widescreen HUD Fix to stop the HUD stretching on widescreen displays and to adjust the field of view (PCGamingWiki).

Synopsis

Painkiller: Overdose is a standalone follow-up to Painkiller that began as a fan project and became an official release. You play Belial, a half-angel, half-demon out for revenge, blasting through arena-style levels packed with monsters using six new weapons and fighting large bosses.

Reception

Critics were lukewarm, with a PC Metascore of 65; reviewers liked a few standout levels but found most stages bland, often reworked from the original game, and noted that it loaded slower than earlier entries. On Steam it is Mostly Positive, with fans valuing more of the old-school Painkiller formula. Recent reviews repeatedly complain about random crashes, very long loading screens, scarce ammunition and recycled enemies.

The full campaign is included, and multiplayer still connects over LAN, direct IP and dedicated servers, though the GameSpy server browser no longer works (PCGamingWiki, Steam reviews).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen resolutions are natively supported, but the HUD stretches without a fan fix (PCGamingWiki).

  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Standard mouse and keyboard shooter controls with remappable keys; there is no controller support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Widescreen resolutions work, but the HUD is stretched incorrectly and needs a fan fix to display properly. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Levels have checkpoints and the game keeps manual save files, so little progress is lost, though each death means sitting through a long level reload. Source: steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The game follows the original Painkiller formula of clearing linear arenas of enemies before moving on, so there is little to learn beyond shooting and finding the exit. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Very long loading screens interrupt every level, and players and critics both point to scarce ammunition and many levels and monsters recycled from the earlier games. Source: worthplaying.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
First-person movement is fast and direct with no camera problems, though the field of view can only be changed with a fan fix. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
