Synopsis

A Build engine first-person shooter and sequel to Redneck Rampage, in which brothers Leonard and Bubba crash-land in the desert after being abducted by aliens and shoot their way back home. Across 14 levels the player fights aliens and hostile locals with joke weapons, hunts for keys and secrets, and drives a motorcycle and a swamp boat in several stages.

Reception

At release and in later looks back, the sequel was seen as an improvement on the first game, with better levels, more enemy variety and the new vehicles. Players on Steam still enjoy its crude humor and the Build engine action. Common complaints are weak weapons and hit detection, maze-like levels where every corridor looks alike, and revisited locations. The Steam release draws particular criticism for awkward default controls with no setup program and, until a later update, a missing soundtrack.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Runs on Windows 11 without fan patches
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
A 2022 update gave the Steam release the same CD audio files as GOG, and the music plays once enabled in the in-game 8-track player, though one 2025 reviewer still found the soundtrack incomplete (Steam Community).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen only works through source ports such as Raze or BuildGDX (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
Controllers are supported and can be remapped (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
PCGamingWiki lists no open issue that crashes the game or blocks progress, and the Steam release runs in a bundled DOSBox build (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

2.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The Steam release starts with a dated DOS layout that strafes with Alt, and it ships without the setup program, so remapping keys means editing the DOSBox config or using the DOSBox keymapper. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The game runs in low-resolution DOS modes inside DOSBox with no widescreen support, and widescreen or higher resolutions need a source port. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Progress can be saved at any point to numbered save files, with the same quicksave system as the first Redneck Rampage on the Build engine. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, justgamesretro.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Players describe confusing sections and maze-like boat levels where everything looks the same, which makes finding the way forward hard without a walkthrough. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Players call stretches of the game a chore, pointing to revisited locations and maze levels that slow the pace. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The first-person view follows the mouse with adjustable sensitivity and an invert option, and the motorcycle and boat steer from the same view. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
