How to get Shenmue I & II running today

  1. If a PlayStation controller crashes the game when opening the menu or the moves list, use an Xbox controller or apply a gamepad template in Steam Input's controller configuration (Steam Community).
  2. If the launcher does not open, create a steam_appid.txt file containing 758330 in the sm1 or sm2 folder and start Shenmue.exe or Shenmue2.exe directly (PCGamingWiki).

Synopsis

Shenmue I & II collects Sega's two Dreamcast-era adventures, in which teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki hunts the man who killed his father, first in 1980s Yokosuka and then in Hong Kong. Players question townspeople, follow leads written in Ryo's notebook, take part-time jobs, train fighting moves and get through brawls and quick-time events in a detailed world that runs on its own clock.

Reception

The 2018 collection holds a 76 PC Metascore and a 73 OpenCritic average. Critics praised the detailed towns and how unique the games still feel, but many called the pacing glacial, the dialogue wooden and the controls imprecise. Steam players rate it Very Positive, and fans value its slow, everyday rhythm. Newcomers often find the waiting around dull, and recent reviews complain about crashes with PlayStation controllers and a 30 FPS cap.

Design today

3/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The remaster offers a modern control scheme, but movement keeps the original's imprecision, the keyboard layout is awkward, and PlayStation controllers crash the game when opening menus. Source: metro.co.uk, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The updated interface runs at widescreen, ultrawide and 4K resolutions with clear menus, though cutscenes stay pillarboxed at 4:3. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
The remaster lets players save anywhere from the menu into multiple slots, and saving at Ryo's bed still works too. Source: pcgamer.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
There are no objective markers, but Ryo's notebook records each lead, and in Shenmue II passersby will walk Ryo to the place he asks about. Source: pcgamer.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Many story events only happen at set times of day, so long stretches go to waiting and asking around; Shenmue II adds a clock skip, but critics still call the pacing glacially slow. Source: metro.co.uk, pcgamer.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
Movement keeps some of the original's loose, imprecise feel, which the Metro review lists among its cons even though it rarely causes real trouble. Source: metro.co.uk.
