Synopsis

A side-scrolling action platformer styled after 8-bit console games. As Shovel Knight, you bounce on enemies with your shovel, dig up treasure and fight through themed stages on the way to the Enchantress, and three further campaigns retell the story as rival knights with their own moves.

What people say

Critics welcomed it at release as one of the best retro-inspired platformers, praising its tight controls, level design, music and charm, and the finished bundle was called the definitive version. Early criticism was minor, mostly about a few reskinned enemies. Players today still rate the original campaign and Specter of Torment highly, while Plague of Shadows is the most divisive campaign for its floaty, harder-to-learn moves and the Showdown multiplayer mode draws little enthusiasm. Some players also grow tired of instant-death pits and spikes.

  • ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardTwo-button controls are praised as tight and responsive on a controller; only the Plague of Shadows campaign draws regular complaints of floatiness. Source: vaporlens.app, destructoid.com.
  • ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThe simple pixel-art screens stay readable and a pixel-perfect scaling option was added, though only 16:9 is supported and some players dislike the menus; evidence on the interface is thin. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, vaporlens.app.
  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressLives are unlimited and checkpoints are frequent; dying only drops some gold you can recover, a system reviewers found fair. Source: destructoid.com.
  • ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThe opening stage teaches by doing rather than through text, an approach critics praised, though Plague of Shadows has a steeper learning curve. Source: destructoid.com, vaporlens.app.
  • ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingEach campaign is a compact run of distinct stages with little grind; the main pacing complaints concern the weaker Plague of Shadows campaign and some repetitive early level design. Source: vaporlens.app.
  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerThe screen-by-screen side view never gets in the way, and players raise no camera complaints; this rests on the absence of complaints. Source: vaporlens.app.
