Synopsis

A turn-based strategy remake of the 1994 Colonization, built on the Civilization IV engine. Players lead a European colony in the New World, found settlements, trade with Europe and native peoples, and grow their economy. The goal is to declare independence and survive the war against the home country's army.

Reception

Critics liked it at release, with a PC Metascore of 83, though many saw it as a faithful but narrow remake that felt like a large Civilization IV mod. Steam players rate it Very Positive. Many reviews say the fan mods We the People and The Authentic Colonization make it much deeper, while players of the 1994 original miss features it dropped. Common complaints are weak rival AIs, a very hard final war of independence and small text on high resolution screens.

Design today

4.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
It is a turn-based strategy game played with the mouse and keyboard shortcuts, with no time pressure; there is no controller support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Mouseover help and other text do not scale with resolution, so they turn small at 1440p and 4K, and players lower the resolution to read them. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Players can save at any time (Ctrl+S, or Shift+F5 for a quicksave), and the game autosaves every few turns at an interval set in the ini file. Source: store.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
A tutorial starts automatically with a new game and can be switched off, advisor screens summarize the colony, and the in-game Civilopedia describes every unit and resource. Source: store.steampowered.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Games move steadily from exploration to trade to revolution, though the final war against the king is long and hard. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The map is turn-based and can be scrolled, recentered from the minimap and zoomed with the mouse wheel or Page Up and Page Down, so the view never has to keep up with action. Source: store.steampowered.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
