How to get Space Empires IV running today
- The game tops out at 1024×768 and shows black borders on larger screens; for a sharper picture, lower the Windows desktop resolution, raise Windows display scaling, or use Windows Magnifier, as players describe in this Steam thread.
- On Linux, raising the DPI in the Wine prefix's winecfg Graphics tab makes the game fill a high-resolution screen with sharper text, as players describe in this Steam thread.
- If the game crashes in long sessions, turn off autosave and avoid the largest galaxies with many AI players, a workaround reported in Steam reviews.
Synopsis
A turn-based 4X space strategy game from Malfador Machinations. You design or pick a species, colonize planets, moons and asteroid belts, research a very large tech tree, design your own ships part by part and fight tactical battles across a galaxy of star systems, against AI empires or other players.

Reception
Critics liked its depth at release, and the PC version holds a 79 on Metacritic. Steam players rate it Very Positive and still praise the custom races, ship design and huge tech tree. Common complaints are the dated, cluttered interface, heavy micromanagement in large empires and an inconsistent AI. Several players warn that newcomers face a steep start with little guidance.

Design today
3/5- Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardPlay is turn-based and fully mouse-driven through menus and map clicks, so nothing depends on reflexes or awkward key binds. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensThe game cannot go above 1024×768, so on modern monitors it shows black borders or a stretched picture, and the strategic map does not scale. Players widely describe the menus as cluttered and dated. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressGames are saved to files in the game's savegame folder, with an optional autosave; one long-time player turns autosave off to avoid crashes in big galaxies. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Hard to make progress without a guideThere is little in-game guidance, and reviewers describe a steep learning curve, an interface that is hard to read at first and a tech tree so vast that the first games feel like practice. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingGrowing empires bring heavy micromanagement of planets and fleets, which players liken to red tape and say only dedicated micromanagers will enjoy. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Camera and movement never fight the playerThe galaxy, system and combat views are flat 2D maps that scroll with the mouse, so there is no camera to fight. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
