How to get Spear of Destiny running today
- If the Steam release stutters or lags, open base\wolf3d.conf in the game folder and set fulldouble to false (PCGamingWiki).
- For widescreen, higher resolutions and modern strafing controls, run the game data through the ECWolf source port instead of the bundled DOSBox.
Synopsis
Spear of Destiny is a first-person shooter from id Software and a prequel to Wolfenstein 3D. As B.J. Blazkowicz, players fight through 21 floors of a Nazi fortress to recover a stolen relic, hunting for keys, treasure and secret walls while facing a series of bosses. The original standalone Steam release also carried two later mission packs, Return to Danger and Ultimate Challenge.

Reception
Released as a boxed retail follow-up in 1992, it sold at least 100,000 copies, according to The Digital Antiquarian. That history also notes the Wolfenstein engine was too basic for compelling level design, and the game adds little beyond new levels, bosses and art. Players on Steam still rate it highly for its challenge and its place in shooter history, while common complaints are the maze-like floors, scarce health and the dated controls. This standalone release is no longer sold on Steam; since September 2022 the game comes only inside the Wolfenstein 3D package, without the mission packs.

Design today
3/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardIn this release the arrow keys turn the player, strafing needs a held Alt key and there is no mouse look; the merged Wolfenstein 3D package later switched to WASD, and players regularly recommend a source port for modern controls. - Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensThe game runs at a low 4:3 resolution inside DOSBox with no native widescreen or 4K support; both need the ECWolf source port. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressPlayers can save at any moment in several slots and reviewers advise saving often; keeping older saves matters, since one mission pack floor can hide the gold key and leave a late save stuck. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThe goal on each floor is plain: find the keys, open the locked doors and reach the elevator, and the original game's simple controls need little explanation. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe floors are large mazes of similar corridors with no automap, so a lot of time goes into wandering and backtracking in search of keys and the exit. Recent players call it even more maze-like than Wolfenstein 3D. Source: steamcommunity.com, filfre.net, steamcommunity.com.
- Camera and movement never fight the playerThe view is a fixed first-person view on a flat plane with no looking up or down, and movement is fast and responsive, so the camera itself never gets in the way. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
