How to get Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Republic Heroes running today
- If the game starts to a black screen, open C:\ProgramData\SWTCWRH\settings.xml, set DisplayWidth and DisplayHeight to the screen resolution and Hertz to 60, then save (Steam review guide).
- Saving runs through Games for Windows Live: sign in to the Xbox app or Xbox Game Bar with a Microsoft account before launching so progress is kept.
- Alternatively, remove Games for Windows Live with the replacement xlive.dll described on PCGamingWiki; progress still saves, but achievements are not awarded.
Synopsis
A third-person action platformer based on the animated Clone Wars series, set between its first two seasons. Players alternate between Jedi who slash through droids and clone troopers who fight like a twin-stick shooter, across about 40 short levels on four planets. A second player can join in local co-op.

Reception
Critics panned it at release, with a PC Metascore of 46, citing clumsy platforming, a poor camera and repetitive combat. Steam players rate it Mixed today. Fans of the show enjoy the cast, the art style and how easily lightsabers cut through droids, and some recommend it as a simple co-op game for children. Common complaints are frustrating jumps, disorienting fixed camera angles and trouble saving because of Games for Windows Live. Steam stopped selling it on January 31, 2025.

- No known game-breaking bugs in the current versionPCGamingWiki lists no game-breaking issue; a black screen at launch is common, and a settings.xml edit from a 2023 Steam review gets past it, though a 2018 thread reports Windows 10 crashes it never solved (PCGamingWiki, Steam Community, Steam Community).
Design today
2.5/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardJumps are imprecise and depth is hard to judge, so characters often miss ledges and fall, which GameRevolution and Steam players both describe, even with an Xbox controller. - Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensWidescreen and 4K resolutions are supported natively, with Xbox button prompts and full controller support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lostLives are unlimited, but every version requires Games for Windows Live, and saving only works through a signed-in profile or a replacement xlive.dll, so many players lose progress on exit until they fix it. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, gamerevolution.com.
- It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressYoda gives on-screen tips as each mechanic appears and levels are short and linear, though one top-rated player review says the button combinations stay confusing. Source: steamcommunity.com.
- Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingJedi levels alternate hack-and-slash with platforming, while Clone Trooper levels repeat a simple hide, shoot and advance loop, with little variety across the campaign. Source: gamerevolution.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Camera or movement fights the playerFixed camera angles make it hard to judge depth and landing spots in jumping sections, a fault GameRevolution and many Steam reviews single out. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamerevolution.com, steamcommunity.com.
