Synopsis

A World War II real-time tactics game in which you lead German, Soviet, Allied and other forces through campaigns of scripted missions. There is no base building or resource gathering: you get a fixed force plus occasional reinforcements and must scout, use cover, repair vehicles, call in artillery and keep ammunition supplied to take or hold the map.

Best version
The Gold Edition is the only version sold today and bundles the base game with the Forever expansion and the Total War add-on, but unlike the original CD release it has no in-game music.

Reception

Critics at release gave it a mixed to positive 69 Metascore on PC from 16 reviews. Long-time fans on Steam still call it a defining tactics game with a huge amount of single-player content and a mission editor. Newer reviews describe tiny units, poor pathfinding, an AI that reacts to invisible triggers and constant save and reload, and say the game has aged badly next to modern tactics games.

  • Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
Every version except the original CD release, including the Steam Gold Edition, is missing the in-game soundtrack (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
Only 4:3 resolutions up to 1024×768 are offered; widescreen needs a fan mod (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
There is no controller support and keys cannot be remapped (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version

Design today

1.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Every soldier and vehicle has to be micromanaged with classic mouse orders, keys cannot be remapped and there is no controller support, and players describe the controls as outdated and tedious in large missions. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The game only offers 640×480, 800×600 and 1024×768, so on modern screens units and mines appear only a few pixels wide, and widescreen needs a fan mod. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Saving is allowed at any time during a mission, though campaign players should save manually at the start of each new mission. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Missions rely on invisible scripted triggers that set off enemy attacks or air raids, and players call several missions confusing until they learn them by failing. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Recent players describe large missions as tedious and much of play as repeated save and reload after scripted counterattacks wipe out units. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
Unit pathfinding is widely criticized, with troops taking poor routes across the map unless moved in small steps. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
