To reduce stuttering, create the missing texture cache folder by hand: in %LOCALAPPDATA% make a folder named MachineGames, and inside it a folder named Wolfenstein The New Order (PCGamingWiki).
- Press Windows+R, type %LOCALAPPDATA% and press Enter. File Explorer opens the AppData\Local folder.
- Right-click an empty area, choose New > Folder and name it MachineGames.
- Open the MachineGames folder.
- Create another folder inside it named Wolfenstein The New Order, spelled exactly like this.
- Start the game and play a little. The folder should now contain cache files, one of them about 1 GB.
- If you uninstall the game later, delete this folder by hand; the uninstaller leaves it behind.
-
If vertical sync keeps switching itself off, turn it off in the game and force it in the graphics driver) instead.
- Start the game, open the video settings, turn off vertical sync, and quit.
- On Nvidia: open the NVIDIA Control Panel, go to Manage 3D settings > Program Settings, and add WolfNewOrder_x64.exe from the game folder.
- Set Vertical sync to On, set Triple buffering to On (the game uses OpenGL, where this option works), and click Apply.
- On AMD: open AMD Software, go to the Gaming tab, click Add > Browse and select WolfNewOrder_x64.exe.
- Click Wait for Vertical Refresh and set it to always on.
- Start the game and check that the picture no longer tears.
Synopsis
A story-driven first-person shooter set in an alternate 1960s where the Nazis won the Second World War, following soldier B.J. Blazkowicz as he joins a small resistance cell. Missions mix loud gunfights, often with two weapons at once, with optional stealth takedowns of commanders who call in reinforcements.
What people say
Critics rated it strongly at release, with 81 percent of OpenCritic's reviewers recommending it, chiefly for its weighty gunplay and a story that takes its absurd premise seriously. Players today still call it a blast and rate its writing and characters well above the shooter norm. Common criticism targets long stretches of shooting without standout set pieces, repetitive stealth, slow cutscenes, a 60 fps cap and a checkpoint-only save system.

Design today
3.5 / 5✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Gunplay is polished with full controller support and good mouse aiming, though some mouse users dislike the weapon wheel. Source: vaporlens.app, pcgamingwiki.com.
✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The HUD is a compact readout of health, armor and ammo, and the menus and perk screen stay legible at 1440p and 4K; Steam reviewers raise no readability complaints. Source: vaporlens.app, community.pcgamingwiki.com.
✗Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
There is no manual save, only checkpoints, and players repeatedly complain about long gaps between them and about being returned to a checkpoint when loading. Source: steamcommunity.com.
✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Missions are linear with clear objectives, and perks unlock through plainly stated challenges. Source: gamingbolt.com.
✗Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Even a fond 2024 retrospective names long stretches of wave-after-wave shooting as its main flaw, and players add repetitive stealth and slow cutscenes. Source: gamingbolt.com, vaporlens.app.
✓Camera and movement never fight the player
First-person movement is smooth and responsive, with only some players finding the camera shake when firing heavy weapons strong. Source: steamcommunity.com.
