Synopsis

A hand-painted point-and-click comedy adventure from former LucasArts designers, starring Mona, a Parisian opera singer turned vampire and held captive in a gloomy castle. Together with her wisecracking bat Froderick, you explore, talk to odd characters and combine items, and later Mona's own bat form, to plan her escape and chase her stage dreams.

Reception

Critics gave it a PC Metascore of 74 from 34 reviews, praising the humor, writing and painted art as a worthy LucasArts tribute while faulting convoluted puzzles and technical problems, including a progress-blocking bug Worthplaying hit in the 2008 release. Players today still enjoy the art and the jokes, but recent Steam reviews complain about slow walking, clunky controls, long load times and puzzles that feel overly complicated.

  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
No servers or content are involved; the game was always a first chapter ending on a cliffhanger (Steam Community).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
Hardcoded to 4:3; widescreen needs an unofficial patch (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
No controller support; Steam Deck players map controls by hand (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Recent Steam reviews report no crashes, and the updated Steam release ships with a DirectX wrapper (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

2.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Actions sit behind a hold-the-left-button cross menu, the right button opens the inventory and warps through exits, and skipping walks needs the space bar, which reviewers found clumsy; there is no controller support. Source: worthplaying.com, steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The game runs at a fixed 1024×768 in 4:3 with no widescreen option, so it fills only the middle of a modern display. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, expertreviews.co.uk.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Saves can be made at any time from the Escape menu and sync through Steam Cloud, though loading a save can take over a minute. Source: worthplaying.com, pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Some puzzles hinge on subtle clues buried in Mona's and Froderick's spoken asides, and recent players still call several puzzles overly complicated. Source: worthplaying.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Mona walks slowly, the companion's commentary drags out every inspection, and long joke-filled dialogue slows the story, even with exit warps and skippable lines. Source: steamcommunity.com, worthplaying.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Each scene is a fixed painted screen with click-to-walk movement, and the space bar and exit warps move Mona instantly, so the view never gets in the way. Source: worthplaying.com.
