How to get An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire running today
- On Level 5, avoid quitting to DOS and reloading more than necessary, and keep backup saves, since each reload adds objects to the save until it can no longer load (UESP).
- If the cursor disappears or loading hangs after a game over, close and restart the game before loading a save (Steam Community).
Synopsis
A first-person dungeon crawler and the first Elder Scrolls spin-off, set in a training fortress for Imperial battlemages that has been overrun by the Daedra of Mehrunes Dagon. You build a character, then fight, sneak and solve puzzles through a chain of large, handmade levels spread across several planes of Oblivion. It leans further toward action than the main series, with fewer role-playing systems.

Reception
Critics in 1997 were split, crediting the level design and Daedric lore while faulting uneven difficulty and a heavy load of bugs. Later retrospectives stay mixed: some writers call its dungeons the best crafted in the series, while others find the drag-to-swing combat clumsy and the goals unclear. Players on Steam often enjoy the atmosphere and lore but describe it as janky, brutally hard and prone to crashes, including a glitch that can leave the game stuck after a game over.

Design today
1.5/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardMovement defaults to the arrow keys, melee attacks are made by holding a button and dragging the mouse in a direction, jumps must be charged, and there is no controller support. - Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensThe game runs only at 640×480 in 4:3, with no widescreen or higher resolution option. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lostSaving is allowed at any time through menu slots, but on Level 5 every reload after the game quits to DOS, which it does on each defeat, bloats the save until it can no longer load, a bug no patch fixed. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, en.uesp.net, en.uesp.net.
- Hard to make progress without a guideThe game explains little about what each level asks of you, starting with a first level where working out the objective is a challenge in itself, and some puzzles rely on deciphering Daedric glyphs. Source: en.uesp.net, gamebanshee.com, shamusyoung.com.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingEach level is a handmade dungeon with its own architecture and rewarding hidden items, rather than generated filler. Source: gamebanshee.com, en.uesp.net.
- Camera or movement fights the playerJumps use a charged distance marker that makes platform sections awkward, and some raised platforms have no way back up after a fall. Source: en.uesp.net, gamebanshee.com.
