Synopsis

Bayonetta is a fast stylish action game from PlatinumGames about an amnesiac witch who fights her way through hordes of angels with guns on her hands and heels. Combos, last second dodges that slow time, and huge summoned finishers drive each chapter, with every fight graded at the end. The 2017 PC port runs the original game at 60 frames per second and up to 4K.

Reception

Critics ranked Bayonetta among the best action games of its generation, and the PC port drew a 93 from PC Gamer, with OpenCritic showing an 85 Top Critic Average across its versions. Reviewers praise the deep, responsive combat, Witch Time and the wild set pieces. The most common criticisms are occasional quick time events with instant death, cutscenes that drop straight into enemy attacks, and a camera that lingers on the heroine in a way some find excessive. On Steam, players still recommend it, though some find button mashing clashes harder on PC than on console.

  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game is single player only and the PC port includes the full game with no servers to lose (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
The game runs at any 16:9 resolution up to 4K, and a bundled registry file removes the black bars on wider screens (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
Full XInput controller support with hotplugging, plus remappable mouse and keyboard controls (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
PCGamingWiki lists only a cosmetic shadow sharpness issue as unresolved, with nothing that crashes or blocks progress (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

4.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Combat inputs are tight and fully remappable, but surprise quick time events cause instant deaths, and the button mashing clashes in the Jeanne fights draw repeated complaints from PC players. Source: pcgamer.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
Menus work with mouse or controller, subtitles are available, and the game renders up to 4K in a 16:9 frame. Ultrawide screens get black bars unless a bundled registry file removes the lock. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
The game saves at checkpoints within each chapter and keeps saves of finished chapters, and Continue resumes from the last checkpoint, so a death or a quit loses little progress. Source: store.steampowered.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
On screen tutorials for the controls can be switched on or off, loading screens offer a practice mode, and Easy and Very Easy loosen timing windows and make attacks stronger for newcomers. Source: store.steampowered.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Chapters move from fight to fight with little filler, broken up by short motorcycle, vehicle and shooter sequences. Some boss retries force a replay of an unskippable cutscene with a quick time event. Source: pcgamer.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The camera follows the action with automatic lock on to nearby enemies, and the third person and first person views each have their own inversion and sensitivity settings. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, store.steampowered.com.
