How to get Bionic Commando Rearmed running today
- If the game crashes at startup, install the legacy PhysX System Software 9.12.1031 along with the current PhysX package; another player fix uses PhysX 9.10.0513 plus Windows 7 compatibility mode on bcr.exe.
- If the game closes silently on CPUs with many cores, use the modified executable that limits it to four cores or turn off SMT, as described on PCGamingWiki.
- Play below 4K, because the hacking minigame does not work at 4K.
- Set the refresh rate by hand, since the game defaults to 60 Hz (PCGamingWiki).
Synopsis
A remake of the 1988 NES action platformer, rebuilt with 2.5D graphics and a remixed soundtrack. Nathan Spencer cannot jump and instead crosses each level by firing and swinging from his bionic arm while shooting through enemy bases. Between stages a top-down map lets players pick routes, and challenge rooms and local co-op add extra play.
Reception
Critics welcomed it as a faithful and sharp update of a cult classic, praising the swinging, the 12 reworked levels plus a new finale, and the unlimited continues. Reviewers also found the arm controls twitchy and the swing cumbersome at times, with some later stages and challenge rooms called very hard. Players on Steam today still like the game but report that it often refuses to start on current Windows without PhysX and compatibility workarounds, and the hacking minigame breaks at 4K.

- Full controller support or remappable controlsFull controller support with three preset layouts (PCGamingWiki).
- Not Steam Deck Verified or Playable
- No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
- No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions

Design today
1.5/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardThe arm fires in five fixed directions and reviewers found the controls finicky. Keys can be remapped, but controller layouts are three presets with no remapping, and a connected controller blocks keyboard play. Source: gamerevolution.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensThe game supports 16:9 and 16:10 but not ultrawide or 4K natively, and its hacking minigame breaks at 4K resolution. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lostProgress saves between levels with unlimited continues, but losing every life in a level sends the player back to the map to restart that level. Source: gamerevolution.com.
- Hard to make progress without a guideThe arm replaces jumping entirely and takes repeated practice to master, and later stages demand precise arm timing that many players only learn through failure. Source: gamerevolution.com, escapistmagazine.com.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe campaign took reviewers from about 8 to well over 10 hours, with the much harder challenge rooms left optional. Source: gamerevolution.com, escapistmagazine.com.
- Camera or movement fights the playerThe side view is fixed, but moving by swing is unforgiving: latching onto the wrong spot drops you, and The Escapist could not find a rhythm in some swinging sections over pits. Source: escapistmagazine.com, gamerevolution.com.
