How to get Deus Ex: Invisible War running today

  1. Install the fan-made Visible Upgrade unofficial patch, linked from PCGamingWiki, for widescreen, FOV and HUD options and fixes for modern systems.
  2. If level loads hang on a black screen on Windows 11, enable the multicore option in the Visible Upgrade settings, as described in this Steam thread, and save often.
  3. Do not install the game on a Windows Storage Spaces drive; it refuses to run there (PCGamingWiki).

Synopsis

The sequel to Deus Ex, set twenty years later, casts the player as Alex D, an augmented trainee caught between rival factions in a collapsing world. Missions can be solved through combat, stealth, hacking or talking, and biomod upgrades open different routes through each hub. Choices about which faction to help shape the ending.

Reception

Critics were positive but cooler than for the first game, with a PC Metascore of 80; reviews liked the freedom of approach and physics but faulted the smaller levels and simplified systems. Steam players now rate it Mixed. Common complaints are constant loading screens, a console-style interface, universal ammo and the stripped-back skill system, along with trouble getting it to run on modern Windows. Fans of the series still recommend it as a flawed but worthwhile chapter, usually with the Visible Upgrade fan patch.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game is single-player only and no content has been removed from the current release (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen, ultrawide and FOV changes require the Visible Upgrade fan patch or manual edits (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
Only DirectInput controllers work out of the box; XInput and full controller play need workarounds (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • Known game-breaking bugs in the current version
On Windows 10 and 11 many players report level loads hanging on a black screen, fixable only with the Visible Upgrade fan patch's multicore option (Steam Community).

1.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Several keys, including quicksave and quickload on F10 and F12, cannot be rebound in the menu and need an Options.ini edit that the game often overwrites. Controller support is limited to DirectInput and needs extra work for XInput pads. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The interface was built for the original Xbox and has no native widescreen support; at 16:9 the HUD is cut off unless the FOV is edited in Display.ini or a fan patch is used. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
Manual saves and quicksaves work anywhere, but quicksaves are known to corrupt or crash on level transitions, so players are told to keep rotating manual saves. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The systems are pared back from the first game, with no skill points to spend, one universal ammo type and fewer biomod choices, so the tools are quick to grasp; some players still misread how the exclusive biomod slots replace each other. Source: gamerevolution.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Levels are split into small chunks separated by frequent loading screens, which players widely name as the game's biggest flaw. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
The default field of view is narrow and can only be changed through an ini edit or the Visible Upgrade patch. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
