How to get Far Cry 2 running today

  1. Install FC2 Jackal Fix by extracting it into the game folder; it fixes bugs at high frame rates (bouncing NPCs that can stall story scenes, low jumps, broken sound) and adds a field of view setting, borderless window and frame cap.
  2. Without the fix, cap the frame rate at 60 FPS in your graphics driver, since high frame rates break character animations.
  3. If the game crashes at the splash screen on a CPU with more than 16 cores, use Far Cry 2 Multi Fixer and set its CPU affinity mask to 15 or less.

Synopsis

An open-world shooter set in a fictional central African country torn by civil war, where you play a mercenary sent to kill an arms dealer called the Jackal. You take contracts from rival factions, drive between outposts, buy and maintain weapons, and fight through a world that does little to hold your hand.

Reception

Critics rated it well at release, with a PC Metascore of 85, praising its fire spreading through dry grass, its gunplay and its commitment to immersion; IGN still called the malaria a nuisance and the long trips between missions out of place. Opinion has stayed split since: a 2018 bit-tech retrospective called it the most important game in the series while naming respawning checkpoints and repetitive missions as its biggest flaws. On Steam it sits at Mostly Positive, with 77 percent of nearly 17,000 reviews recommending it.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
Ubisoft shut down the official multiplayer service on June 1, 2021; online play now needs a fan patch (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen and 4K work since patch 1.02, with stretched menus on ultrawide (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
XInput controllers are fully supported, though without button prompts or remapping (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
PCGamingWiki documents workarounds for the crash on CPUs with more than 16 cores and for high frame rate bugs that can stall story scenes, so nothing blocks progress once they are applied (PCGamingWiki).

  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Xbox controllers work, but there are no on-screen button prompts and controller buttons cannot be remapped. Some keyboard commands, such as leaving turrets and using the wristwatch, are locked to the default keys. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
Widescreen and 4K resolutions are supported since patch 1.02 and subtitles are available; the map and GPS are physical objects the character holds. Menus and loading screens only stretch on ultrawide displays. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, bit-tech.net.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
On PC the game can be saved from the menu or with quicksave at any time, so the safe house save points carried over from consoles are optional, and each quicksave creates a new save instead of overwriting the last one. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The game opens with a short tutorial section that introduces the controls and the premise before the open world unlocks. Source: ign.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Guard posts respawn soon after you clear them, so the long drives between missions are repeatedly interrupted by the same fights, and missions follow a narrow template. Source: bit-tech.net, ign.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
The unmodded game has no field of view setting and adds blur when sprinting and aiming; both can only be changed with fan tools. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, github.com.
