How to get Gorky 17 running today
- If the screen flickers, open the game's launcher, pick the graphics card in use, tick Disable Hardware Zoom, or switch to the software renderer (PCGamingWiki).
- If the game does not start, try the alternative executables in the game folder (Steam Community).
- To avoid the Incubus boss crash, kill the other monsters first and finish both Incubi in the same turn, before their thrown balls explode (PCGamingWiki).
Synopsis
Gorky 17, released in North America as Odium, is a turn-based tactical role-playing game set in a ruined Soviet-era secret city in Poland. A three-man NATO squad goes in to find a missing team and runs into mutated creatures. Players explore the city in real time and fight on a grid in turn-based battles, where ammunition and healing items are scarce.

Reception
Players on Steam still recommend it as a tense, atmospheric mix of squad tactics and survival horror, with careful ammo management in every fight. They also call the voice acting poor, the story vague, and the RPG side thin. A recent retrospective on DTF found the tactics still playable but noted clear inconveniences and some unfair design choices. The fixed 640×480 picture looks very dated on modern screens.

Design today
3.5/5- Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardExploration and combat run on the mouse, with inventories and weapon swaps handled by clicking and dragging and a command bar along the bottom; moves cannot be undone, so misclicks cost turns. Source: steamcommunity.com, gamesfirst.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensThe game renders only at 640×480 with no widescreen or higher resolution option, so text and icons are large and blurry on modern displays. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressProgress is saved manually into named slots from the menu, so players decide how much they risk; whether saving works mid-battle is not documented. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Hard to make progress without a guidePlayers report that it is often unclear where to go next. A recruitable character can be missed by not using the right item on a door, and the game gives no hint. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingMaps are short and lead quickly into the next fight, and players describe the whole game as a short trip, with difficulty coming from scarce supplies rather than filler. Source: steamcommunity.com, dtf.ru.
- Camera and movement never fight the playerScenes use a fixed top-down view over detailed pre-drawn backgrounds, and combat switches to a clean grid screen. Source: steamcommunity.com, gamesfirst.com.
