How to get Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas running today

  1. Downgrade the Steam version to v1.0 with the San Andreas Downgrader or Jetpack Downgrader; this also restores removed radio songs.
  2. Install the Ultimate ASI Loader, which the fixes below need.
  3. Install SilentPatch to fix mouse, Alt+Tab, crash and many gameplay bugs.
  4. Install the Widescreen Fix for a correct aspect ratio, HUD and field of view.
  5. Keep the frame rate at 30, or install Framerate Vigilante before going higher, since faster rates break game timing.

Synopsis

An open-world crime game set in a 1990s take on California and Nevada, following Carl Johnson as he returns home to Los Santos and gets pulled back into gang life. You drive, shoot and fly across three cities and the countryside, taking story missions and side jobs while building up your character's fitness and skills.

What people say

Critics at release called it one of the biggest and most ambitious open-world games yet, praising its huge map, story and sheer variety of things to do. Retrospectives still credit its characters, soundtrack and side activities. The usual criticisms today are sparse mission checkpoints that force full restarts, clunky aiming without cover, a wayward camera and a game that does not respect your time.
