Synopsis
Grand Theft Auto V is an open-world crime game set in Los Santos, a satire of modern Los Angeles. You switch between three criminals, a retired bank robber, a young street hustler and an unstable drifter, as they plan and pull off heists, and between story missions you can drive, fly and cause trouble across a large city and countryside.
What people say
Critics called it one of the best games of its generation, praising the heist missions, the three-character structure and the scale of its world, and the PC version was singled out for its visual options and first-person mode. Later reviews of the re-releases still find the story well paced but note that the satire and humor have aged, the single-player content has not grown since 2013, and the on-foot controls and aiming feel heavy next to newer action games. Players also point to a few tedious missions and the long shadow of GTA Online, which has received far more attention than the story mode.

Design today
4.5 / 5✗Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Driving is good, but on-foot movement and cover feel sluggish, and a Destructoid review called the auto-aim twitchy and the cover system dated and clumsy. Source: en.wikipedia.org.
✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The phone, weapon wheel, compass and map are clear and readable, and the PC version runs at up to 4K with customizable controls. Source: en.wikipedia.org.
✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Missions have checkpoints, and the game offers to skip a failed section after repeated failures, so a failure costs little time. Source: gta.wiki.
✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The prologue and early missions introduce shooting, driving and the phone one at a time with on-screen prompts, and GPS routes mark every objective. Source: en.wikipedia.org.
✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Story missions are well connected and short, and the player switches among three characters, so few stretches feel like filler. Source: en.wikipedia.org.
✓Camera and movement never fight the player
The third-person camera is adjustable and works well on foot and in cars, and a first-person view is available, although reviewers found shooting harder in it. Source: en.wikipedia.org.
