The Steam version still depends on the defunct Games for Windows Live service and has long been off sale there, while the DRM-free GOG release drops that dependency (and online play) and is the easier one to run.

How to get Kane & Lynch: Dead Men running today

  1. The Steam version relies on Games for Windows Live, which no longer works and can crash the game on startup; place a replacement xlive.dll in the game folder to play single-player without it.
  2. If the game stutters or freezes, add DInput8Wrapper to the game folder.
  3. If a police car kills Lynch inside the van in chapter 4, cap the frame rate at 30 FPS for that section.
  4. See PCGamingWiki for controller and other fixes.

Synopsis

A third-person crime shooter that follows Kane, a betrayed mercenary on his way to death row, and Lynch, an unstable fellow convict, after their escape from a prison transport. Forced to recover a stolen fortune for the gang that wants Kane dead, the pair shoot their way through heists and city streets while ordering a small crew into position.

What people say

Critics at release were split, crediting the bleak story and two thoroughly unlikable leads while faulting loose aiming, weak shooting and a short campaign. Players today still praise the writing and the gritty, film-like city levels, and some call it underrated. Many also call the gunplay mediocre, the recoil excessive and the pacing poor once the story leaves the city, and the Steam release needs fan workarounds just to start.
